Hair Transplantation Surgery
Whether you are undergoing a male-to-female or female-to-male transition, transgender hair transplants work essentially the same. At our practice, we offer both modern forms of hair transplantation surgery: follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). Each patient requires a different strategy for their hair restoration, and Dr. Arocha works with his patients individually to determine the best approach for optimal results.
During an FUT procedure, Dr. Arocha removes a strip of the scalp located on the back or sides of the head. He then closes the excision while our highly trained technicians dissect the strip to separate the hair follicles from the surrounding tissue. He then sutures the scalp shut using dissolvable stitches to close the excision. The healthy follicular units are transplanted one by one into the balding and thinning areas of the scalp, with great care taken by Dr. Arocha to mimic and recreate the natural patterns of surrounding hair growth. The procedure is completed using local anesthesia and lasts about four to six hours.
During an FUE procedure, Dr. Arocha removes follicular units one at a time from the donor area located on the back or sides of the scalp. This method, which utilizes a handheld punch device, does not require strip removal and leaves minimal scarring compared to FUT. The harvested hair follicles are then transplanted using the same technique. FUE is also completed under local anesthesia and typically lasts two to four hours, although the length of the procedure will vary based on how many transplants are needed.
Both methods of hair transplantation surgery are effective, safe and produce natural-looking results. A slightly longer recovery may be needed for FUT patients as they allow their incision to heal. The resulting scar from the strip removal is easily hidden among surrounding hair growth. FUE tends to be better for patients who require only a small number of transplants or like to wear their hair short. With either procedure, Dr. Arocha can produce beautiful results that mimic natural hair growth and can be brushed, cut, and styled just like normal hair.
Male-to-Female Transgender Patients
While both men and women experience thinning hair later on in life, men are especially susceptible to the effects of age-related hair loss. For MTF transgender patients, the central focus of hair restoration is often rebuilding a thinning hairline or maintaining existing hair using transgender hair transplants and non-surgical treatment options. A typical feminine hairline is lower, flatter, and rounder than a natural masculine hairline, and Dr. Arocha can recreate the shape of a female hairline using FUE and FUT procedures.
For MTF transgender patients who have already suffered significant hair loss, Dr. Arocha can fill in bald spots and create thicker hair while also producing a more feminine hairline during a comprehensive transgender hair transplant procedure. Once patients have achieved their desired look using hair transplantation surgery, Dr. Arocha offers a variety of hair loss prevention methods designed to help his patients keep their hair for years to come.
Unfortunately, patients who receive hair transplants are not immune to future hair loss and MTF transgender patients will need to utilize a multi-faceted restoration approach to ensure they maintain their fuller, thicker hair. With advanced hair restoration and regrowth treatments, as well as the use of prescription medications like Rogaine and Propecia, Dr. Arocha can help his MTF transgender patients incorporate a daily routine that combats the effects of male pattern baldness for beautiful, thick, natural hair.
Female-to-Male Transgender Patients
FTM transgender patients tend not to require hair transplantation surgery to achieve a more masculine appearance since they are not as susceptible to hair loss, although Dr. Arocha can certainly perform the procedure as needed. Minimally invasive hair loss prevention treatments and hair loss medication are the main recommended options for FTM transgender patients who want to ensure they maintain their natural hair well into the future.
For FTM transgender patients, obtaining a defined and full beard is often the main focus of their treatment. We offer facial hair transplants to help our patients supplement the results of their hormone therapy by thickening mustaches, filling in beards and improving sideburns. During facial hair transplant surgery, Dr. Arocha uses the FUE approach to only remove as many follicular units as are necessary to achieve the patient’s desired look. He chooses the source of the grafts with precision to ensure they can accurately replicate and match the look of the existing facial hair growth for truly seamless results.
A great amount of artistic skill is needed during facial hair transplants to accurately sculpt a realistic beard, and Dr. Arocha is more than capable of delivering life-changing results with his extensive experience.
Facial hair transplants can also extend to the eyebrows and eyelashes for both FTM and MTF patients who are interested in augmenting the shape, density and thickness of their brows and lashes.
