Using the ARTAS® Robotic System with FUE

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique is one of the most innovative and popular methods of hair transplantation available. With the ability to move individual hair follicles as opposed to larger strips of hair, the results of FUE are often incredibly natural. FUE is a technique that is often performed in conjunction with many advanced hair transplant technologies that may include the use of infrared cameras, calculations for the ideal number and density of transferred follicular units, and software to help determine the precise angle and depth of each transplanted follicular unit to produce the most natural-looking results. The ARTAS® Robotic System is one of these integral technologies, and it allows Dr. Arocha to optimize the outcome of FUE. With the combination of the ARTAS® Robotic System, the FUE technique, and Dr. Arocha’s extensive skills and experience with hair transplantation, the harvesting of individual hair follicles can be facilitated in a manner that greatly minimizes scarring at the donor site. Consequently, patients who undergo a hair transplant procedure with the ARTAS®Robotic System and FUE can typically maintain very short hairstyles with virtually no noticeable scarring or evidence of surgery.

The ARTAS® Robotic System Procedure

First, Dr. Arocha will trim the area of the scalp that will serve as the donor location. The ARTAS® Robotic System will then be used to digitize the area and create a virtual map. Dr. Arocha will apply a local anesthetic to the donor area and a skin tensioner to the scalp to allow the ARTAS® System to precisely locate and harvest the hair that will be transplanted. During the procedure, you will be able to clearly communicate with Dr. Arocha. The local anesthetic should ensure that you experience little to no pain.

Each natural hair grouping will be digitally mapped. Dr. Arocha will guide the ARTAS®System while it harvests the donor hair in a way that allows the donor area to retain its original appearance. The process will be repeated until an adequate amount of hair has been harvested for transplantation. The donor hairs will then be carefully placed into the areas of thinning hair on the scalp, where they should gradually begin to grow as permanent hair.

ARTAS® Robotic System Recovery and Results

Recovery from the ARTAS® Robotic System procedure will be dependent on each patient’s unique treatment plan; however, most patients are able to resume normal daily routines within a day or two. Dr. Arocha will provide you with detailed instructions for the days following the procedure, including how to protect the scalp from UV rays and the best way to wash your hair. Patients who experience any physical discomfort in the days following the procedure can often take an over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate this sensation. Noticeable improvement is often apparent about six months following the procedure. By the ninth month, many patients experience natural-looking hair that will last forever.
