Non-Surgical Hair Restoration vs. Transplant Surgery: Which Is Better?
Hair loss can affect men and women as they age. Genetics, hormonal changes, and medical conditions are some of the factors that cause thinning and baldness. Many people are distressed by changes to the hairline, the hair’s volume, and thickness because they believe it compromises their appearance and makes them look older.
Fortunately, hair restoration treatments effectively address hair loss and restore volume to thinning areas. Hair transplant surgery is a popular surgical treatment but some desire a less-invasive solution. Dr. Bernardino Arocha discusses non-surgical hair restoration vs. transplant surgery with his Houston, TX, patients to determine which best suits their unique needs and desires.
Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair transplant surgery is a well-known treatment for hair loss. During a transplant procedure, Dr. Arocha collects hair follicles from one area of the scalp (typically the back of the head) and transplants them to areas impacted by hair loss and thinning. In the past, hair plugs were the only available transplant technique. Some people avoided transplant treatment because they believed hair plugs gave an unnatural appearance.
Today’s hair transplant methods use cutting-edge technology to provide effective and natural-looking results. Dr. Arocha performs follicular unit transplant (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) at his Houston hair restoration center. Both techniques use the patient’s hair follicles to restore a full, thick hairline.
- FUT - During an FUT procedure, Dr. Arocha removes a thin strip of skin from the donor site. He isolates individual hair follicle grafts from the skin and transplants them to areas of hair loss to restore volume.
- FUE - During an FUE procedure, Dr. Arocha uses small circular incisions to remove individual hair grafts from the donor site. As with an FUT procedure, he strategically places individual grafts to add volume to areas of hair loss.
Non-surgical Hair Restoration
Hair transplant surgery is safe and effective and results in minimal scarring. Still, some of our Houston patients are reluctant to undergo a surgical procedure. Dr. Arocha offers non-surgical hair restoration in addition to hair transplant surgery. Non-surgical hair restoration can be performed alone or as a complement to surgical hair restoration.
The LaserCap® LCPRO™ and scalp micropigmentation are two popular non-surgical hair restoration treatments offered by Dr. Arocha.
- LaserCap® LCPRO™ - The LaserCap® LCPRO™ uses low-level laser light therapy to stabilize or stop hair loss. We typically advise patients to wear the laser cap three times a week for 30 minutes. With consistent use, the cap can halt hair loss and even stimulate hair regrowth.
- Scalp micropigmentation - Scalp micropigmentation is a medical tattooing procedure to enhance the scalp’s appearance. Tattooing sparse areas of the scalp gives the impression of volume and makes the hair appear fuller.
Which Is Better?
Hair transplant surgery is the most effective solution for hair loss and thinning. However, non-surgical hair restoration can benefit individuals with minimal hair loss or those hesitant to undergo surgery. Combining surgical and non-surgical methods is another option to maximize hair restoration results. Dr. Arocha works with patients to create an optimal treatment plan based on their needs and preferences.
