How Eyebrow Transplants Work: What Patients Need to Know
The eyebrows are an important facial feature. When hair loss causes the eyebrows to appear thin or patchy, it can have a dramatic effect on both appearance and confidence.
Whether eyebrow hair loss is caused by overplucking, genetics, or other issues, an eyebrow transplant can restore fullness to the eyebrows and enhance overall appearance.
At Arocha Hair Restoration, Dr. Bernardino Arocha performs eyebrow transplants on Houston, TX, patients. To find out if an eyebrow transplant is right for you, we welcome you to schedule a consultation. In the meantime, read on to learn more about eyebrow transplants.
What Is an Eyebrow Transplant?
An eyebrow transplant is a surgical procedure used to restore hair to the eyebrows and make them look fuller using hair follicles taken from the scalp.
Eyebrow transplants are ideal for those who have experienced eyebrow hair loss due to overplucking, aging, genetics, alopecia, or other conditions that have caused the eyebrows to become thin or patchy.
An eyebrow transplant provides permanent results, making it a great option for those who want the appearance of fuller brows without depending on makeup or tattoos.
The Eyebrow Transplant Procedure
The eyebrow transplant process begins with a consultation to discuss the patient’s goals with the procedure and to develop a treatment plan.
On the day of the procedure, the area on the scalp where hair follicles will be harvested (the donor site) is numbed with a local anesthetic, as are the eyebrows, to keep patients comfortable during the surgery.
Once numb, hair follicles are removed from the donor area of the scalp either individually or a small strip of the scalp tissue is removed from which hair follicles are harvested. Stitches are used to close incisions made in the donor area. Any resulting scars are usually well hidden by hair growth.
Small incisions are made in the eyebrow area and individual hair follicles are then transplanted into the eyebrows. After the hair follicles are placed to achieve the desired look, an ointment or bandage may be applied to the treated areas to promote healing during recovery.
Recovery After an Eyebrow Transplant
Houston patients are able to go home after surgery but should prepare to rest and follow aftercare instructions to reduce the risk of complications and facilitate healing.
A full recovery after an eyebrow transplant can take several weeks but most patients will be able to resume normal activities within that time upon approval by their doctor.
What Results to Expect
The results of an eyebrow transplant are permanent but can take 6 months or longer for full results to be apparent. This is because the transplanted hair may shed shortly after surgery. Shedding is normal and new hair should be visible over the next several weeks to months.
Once the eyebrow hair has grown in and the skin has healed, the eyebrows can be trimmed and groomed if desired.
